Vaginal or Yoni steaming is a traditional practice in numerous cultures around the world. Known as Tete in Mozambique, KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, Yogyakarta in Indonesia, and Chonburi in Thailand. This therapy is used for postpartum healing, menstrual regulation, and improved fertility. The treatment involves sitting over a pot of steaming water that is infused with medicinal herbs. The warm steam improves circulation and the herbs are absorbed through the exposed skin and mucous membranes.

In 2019 a study was conducted on the efficacy of steaming as a postpartum therapy. The study’s findings indicate that vaginal steaming has a positive impact on a number of postpartum healing indicators, including blood pressure, pulse, uterine restoration, reduction of weight and waist size, healing of tears, gapping and swelling, the expulsion of lochia, bowel regularity and hemorrhoid reduction (Garza, K. et, al, 2019). While further research is needed to validate claims that vaginal steaming improves fertility and decreases the severity of conditions like endometriosis, PMS, and polycystic ovarian syndrome initial studies are very promising.
